Cs 221 Final Project: Automatic Score Following

This project aims to develop a mechanism for automatic page turning, the task of following a human performance of a musical piece, as compared to a reference musical score. At each timestep during a performance, our program outputs an estimate of the current location in the score, measured in beats from the start of the piece. The ultimate goal is to use this inference module to design an interface that scrolls to the appropriate place in the sheet music as needed. We perform inference using two contrasting models. One models the musical performance with a Dynamic Bayes Network (DBN), while the other uses sequence alignment algorithms commonly used in genomics. Both strategies yield good results on multiple pieces of music, with error significantly less than that of our baseline algorithm.
